The Assistant Chief, Dental Service serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures. The incumbent assists the Chief, Dental service in administration of the Dental Service in compliance with applicable VHA, VISN, Med Center and Dental Service Handbooks, Directives, Policies and Procedures. Dental officers shall hold the following minimum qualifications: Citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates. Graduate of a dental school, in receipt of a D.M.D. or D.D.S. degree or its equivalent and licensed to practice dentistry in one of the states or territories of the United States or the District of Columbia. Has completed an American Dental Association approved one or two-year dental general practice residency or has 3 or more years of professional practice clinical experience. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification is required if conscious sedation is performed. Must be proficient in spoken and written English. Have knowledge of computerized dental patient records systems, and their application to dental patients, to include approved abbreviations and the format for completion of progress notes. Is compliant with maintaining patient confidentiality per HIPAA regulations relative to both written and verbal patient information. Is compliant with VHA cyber-security policies and directives. The provider will perform only those privileges for which approval has been granted by the Medical Center Director prospectively and in writing. Initial granting of privileges will be based on previous credentials, training and clinical experience and subject to focused performance evaluation (FPPE). Subsequent renewal of privileges will be subject to ongoing professional performance evaluation (OPPE) outcomes and satisfaction of required criteria, such as maintaining licensure, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and continuing professional education. Clinical Duties: 70-90% A staff dentist or dental specialist provides direct patient care in a hospital or outpatient setting to adults with or without acute and chronic medical conditions and serves as a consultant to other healthcare providers. The dentist is experienced in interpretation of dental radiographs and in delivery of diagnostic consultations and clinical dental treatment as outlined in their individual approved privileges. They will adhere to the Bylaws of the VA St. Louis Health Care System Medical Staff. He/she maintains their own professional qualifications, participates in customer service training, computer training, and attends mandated medical center training activities as required. The Assistant Chief, Dental Service shall be knowledgeable of all disciplines of clinical dentistry as listed below. Administrative Duties: 10-30% The administrative duties, roles, and responsibilities of this position will be delegated by the Chief/ACOS of Dental Service. The incumbent will supervise dental staff at John Cochran and/or Jefferson Barracks as delegated by the Chief/ACOS of Dental Service. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 4:00pm. NOTE: May be expected to work rotating weekends and holidays. Pay Schedule: The salary range listed in this announcement is a Base-Line Salary ($215,000-$235,000) range estimate for a full-time work schedule.
