The Chief, Dental Service Line serves as a practicing Dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures. Further, the selectee will provides the administration of the Dental Service Line in compliance with applicable VGA, VISN, Medical Center and Dental Service Handbooks, Directives, Policies, and Procedures. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or Dental Medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Preferred Experience: Leadership Experience and Board Certification Preferred References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-3 Dentist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The incumbent should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 4 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position. See VA Directives and Handbook 5019, Employee Occupational Health Service. ["Clinical Scope of Duties: The Chief, Dental Services Line shall be knowledgeable of all disciplines of clinical dentistry as listed below. The Chief should also possess the expertise and competency to perform their specific scope of practice defined through the medical center credentialing and privileging process. Clinical Dentistry is the practice of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and malformations of the teeth, jaws, and human oral cavity and its adjacent tissues and structures. It is compromised of the following disciplines: Oral Surgery is the dental discipline that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of oral conditions requiring surgical interventions including uncomplicated removal of teeth, recontouring of the alveolus, and other routine hard and soft tissue oral surgical procedures Prosthodontics is the dental discipline of making artificial replacements for missing parts of the mouth and jaw Periodontics is the dental discipline that deals with diseases of the supporting and investing structures of the teeth including the gums, cementum, periodontal membranes and alveolar bone Endodontics is the dental discipline concerned with diseases of the pulp Orthodontics is the dental discipline dealing with irregular alignment/relationship of the teeth/jaw and their correction Administrative Scope of Duties: Directly or indirectly, supervises all individuals in the Dental Service Completes, or supervises completion of, interim and annual performance appraisals on all individuals on the Dental ORG chart Participates in the new employee Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) process, and in the Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) process. Participates in the FPPEfor-cause process if required Completes, or supervises completion of, new employee FPPEs, OPPEs and FPPEfor -cause) on all physicians on the Dental ORG chart Recruits clinical and administrative staff to appropriately operationalize the Dental Service strategic plan Responsible for the fiscal oversight of the Dental Service Organizes and chairs monthly Dental Staff meetings Participates in facility High Reliability Organization (HRO) activities Participates in selected committees as designated by the Chief of Staff (e.g. Peer Review Committee, Electronic Health Records Committee, Medical Executive Council, etc.) Focuses efforts of entire Dental staff to provide highest possible quality service at all times Adheres to the Medical Staff Bylaws, policies, procedures, and SOPs of this facility Adheres to accreditation standards, including IG, Joint Commission, and other applicable survey/oversight entities Cooperates with other members of the medical staff to achieve high quality wholehealth patient care Participates in academic activities and presentations, both within and outside the medical center Reports outcomes that he/she believes did not meet acceptable standards to the Chief of Staff Participates in education and training of dental residents, medical students, and staff as applicable Participates as requested in the facility Peer Review process Participates in completion of physician Payfor-Performance awards by developing specialty-specific metrics, sharing metrics at initiation of the performance period, and compiling results at completion of the performance period Provides consultative dental services consistent with the ambulatory status of the Manchester VAMC Maintains BLS certification Maintains an active medical license in the United States Acquires CMEs and participates in MOC as required by the individual's specialty board VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
