Position Summary
The Patient Financial Specialist plays a key role in supporting the financial health of the organization by managing patient collections, payment plans, bankruptcy accounts, and coordination with contracted collection agencies. This position requires strong attention to detail, professionalism, and a patient-centered approach when working with sensitive financial information.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are representative of the position and may be modified as business needs evolve.
Patient Financial & Collections Responsibilities
Contact patients regarding outstanding balances and establish, manage, and monitor payment plans
Upload, maintain, and manage patient accounts within contracted collection agency software
Resolve and manage patient disputes related to collections
Work directly with contracted collection agencies to support account resolution
Handle credit card disputes related to patient accounts
Bankruptcy Management
Manage and track bankruptcy accounts
Maintain and update bankruptcy cases within the Athenahealth practice management system
Compliance & Administrative Responsibilities
Adhere to all OMG policies and procedures, including HIPAA, OSHA, and PCI DSS requirements
Maintain strict confidentiality, privacy, and data security standards
Work within the Billing Compliance Plan and established billing guidelines
Perform other administrative duties as assigned
Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment
Deliver faxes and documentation to billing department staff as needed
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent
Strong computer skills
Minimum of 5 years of healthcare collections experience
Minimum of 2 years of billing experience
Preferred Education and Experience
Some college coursework (medical, business, or accounting focus preferred)
Bilingual (preferred)
EMR experience, preferably Athenahealth practice management system

Interact with patients and families in a courteous, respectful, and professional manner
Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies
Follow proper chain of command for patient concerns or complaints

Salary: $20 - $23 / hour
